BEST WAY OF "PREPARING FOR JEE MAIN 2014"

An overview of JEE Main 2014 in terms of its syllabus, the strategy that students should adopt and the important subjects which should be studied in detail
Always attempt theoretical questions first and then questions require calculations. It is advisable to avoid numerical questions in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the exam.
APPROXIMATELY 14 lakh students are expected to appear for JEE-Main 2014 and only 1.5 lakh students from all categories will be able to qualify to take the JEE (Advanced) exam. The JEE (Main)-Offline will be held on April 6,2014 and online between April 9-19,2014. Those within the top 20 percentile of their respective class XII boards and clear the JEE (Advanced) will make it to the final merits list of the IITs. For ensuring seat in one of NITs, IITs or government funded institutes, besides cuts-offs in JEE Main, 40 per cent of board marks will also be added to 60 per cent in JEE Mains for merit list. The following are the points a serious  aspirant must keep in mind.

SECTION AND SUBJECTS

Clearing JEE (Main) is not a difficult task , Systematic approach towards its preparation will help students get admission into one of the top National Institute of Technology (NITs). JEE (Main) consists of CBSE syllabus of physics, chemistry and mathematics and some common topics from 11th and 12th of State boards. In JEE (Main) 2013, chemistry was difficult as compared to JEE (Main) 2012 . Mathematics was relatively simple. Generally, about 25 per cent of the question in the examination paper are easy , 50 per cent are average and 25 per cent are difficult. The cut-off for JEE (Main) is generally around 60 per cent for NITs and IITs.

STRATEGY FOR EXAMS

  • Speed and accuracy is an important aspect , which comes from extensive practice of questions.
  • Always mark time with a clock while solving JEE (Main) papers. In maths , use short methods for calculations, skip irrelevant steps to save time.
  • The most important thing is clarity of concepts and regular practice in problem solving. JEE (Main) is not difficult. However, its questions do need different tricks to solve tricky ones. Focus on solving the problems on your own, while preparing for the exam. Start with conventional methods of problems solving but improvise constantly and build your own shortcuts and ways of problem solving.
  • Both speed and strike rate matter. You need to be quick and accurate to achieve high scores. High speed with less accuracy can actually ruin your results. Never use calculator while preparing for the JEE (Mains). Beings adept in mental calculations can actually increase your speed to a great extent. Select your questions wisely. If you solve easy and average question correctly, you may attempt difficult ones later to make better rank , after having attempted easy and moderate questions. Gather and implement tips , gain confidence, be positive, and you will ace JEE (Main).

IMPORTANT TOPICS

Students are advised to avoid selective study in physics, chemistry and mathematics. The reason being, the number of questions is more in the objective papers where there is intermingling of concepts from various topics. However, the improvement topics, subject wise as appeared in JEE (Main)-2013 are the following. In physics it was that 40 per cent question were easy, 52 per cent medium level and 8 per cent difficult. More weigh age was given to chapters like mechanics and electromagnetism, optics, modern physics and current electricity. In chemistry, 40 per cent question were easy, 50 per cent medium level and 10 per cent difficult. More weightage was given to chapters in physical chemistry than inorganic and organic chemistry. In mathematics , 32 per cent question were easy, 58 per cent medium level and 10 per cent difficult. More weightage was given to chapters of algebra, co-ordinates geometry, calculus, than vectors and 3-dimensional geometry and trigonometry.

EXPERT ADVICE

Always attempt theoretical questions which require calculation. It's human nature that if you attempt a few confidence questions in the beginning then you feel loaded with positive energy which increases your efficiency and speed for the rest of the paper. It is advisable to avoid numerical question in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the exam.

CRACKING THE CODE

  • Have complete knowledge of the JEE (Main) syllabus.
  • Do a sound analysis of the exam.
  • Review the changing pattern of the exam in last few years.
  • Have the right strategy for the exam.
  • Gain confidence to crack it by practicing regularly.
  • Most importantly, don't panic, No one is perfect. Stay calm on the exam day and give your best performance.
AVOID THESE MISTAKES

  1. Opt for the offline exam if you do not feel comfortable with the online one.
  2. Watch your speed if you are appearing in online mode. Make use of the rough sheet given to you wherever necessary. Immediately update the invigilator in case you encounter a technical problem with your system.
  3. Read and follow all the instructions given in the question papers  very carefully. Plan your time and keep extra time in hand for revision. Even those appearing for an online exam shall be given the option to scroll back the attempted questions and change if necessary before they actually submit.
  4. Prioritize after a quick glance and start answering with the question you know best. Move progressively to the ones you find difficult after attempting the complete paper. You must attempt questions carrying no negative marks.
  5. Don't be nervous if you find the paper tough since it is the relative performance that counts. Hence, put your best analytical mind to work. it will take you ahead.
